Because of the boarder crossing mobility of road vehicles like passenger cars and trucks, cellular technology based communication is the best way to connect vehicles with traffic management and road infrastructure systems. Latest traffic and road safety information, emergency information and road tolling information are directly exchanged via a vehicle on-board unit equipped with an automotive grade wireless communication module.

Case summary

Navigating roadways and surface streets is a challenge for commercial vehicles and trucks. The task is made easier with a Cinterion wireless module and a SIM card. The on-board telematics unit of this truck sends information about position, length, width, height and weight of the vehicle to a traffic information center. The traffic information center responds with specific information relevant to the truck's route. For instance, the truck driver is being notified of an accident and a lane closure two kilometers ahead. In addition, due to road construction, the width of the lane is too narrow for the truck. The truck is being guided on an alternative route that bypasses the danger zone. Next, the truck driver requests assistance finding an unloading dock in the city's bank district. The telematics unit responds with a list of available unloading locations. After selecting the most convenient loading bay, the truck is guided directly to the site. After completing his stop in the bank district, the truck driver continues on his route and returns to the highway. He enters a request in his telematics unit for overnight truck parking. Instantly, a list of available overnight truck parking zones is displayed along his planned route. The driver selects a parking location and confirms a reservation for the night.
