REMOTE VEHICLE ACCESS

Remote Vehicle Access
Drivers of electric vehicles will all have a need for vehicle telematics services. With M2M (machine-to-machine) technology, drivers can easily access their vehicle remotely to handle the charging process.  Based on GSM communication, vehicle information can be automatically provided to a telematics service center for the driver, who can use his smart phone to access all information and change settings just as he would if he were in his vehicle. He can also receive automatic notifications directly to his phone in case of specific events.

Case summary

The owner of an electric vehicle (EV) drives up to the parking area of her workplace. The EV display shows the current battery status is 20% along with the number of kilometers that can be driven before the battery requires recharging. Before exiting the vehicle, the driver chooses between three charging modes: fast, normal, and eco. Via a Cinterion  wireless module, the chosen charging mode and the current battery status are instantly communicated to the telematics server of the EV manufacturer. The driver can check the charging progress with her mobile phone. Later that morning, the driver is notified of an urgent off-site meeting scheduled for early afternoon.
She checks her smart phone to view up-to-the-minute charging status, which is sent instantly via the Cinterion module. The current battery status is at 25 % and the possible driving distance equals 55 kilometers before the next recharging is required. The driver immediately speeds up the charging process by selecting the “Fast Charging” option on her mobile phone. Her EV will be fully charged and ready to drive in time to the meeting with a couple quick clicks of a button.
